Access the network with several IP addresses

You want to access different devices from different subnets with your PC?
You want to use the same ports in the same subnet from diffenet applications?
Then you might need to assign several IP addresses to your adapter.
This is a operating system specific and network specific question, but often asked by our customers.

Example 1:
You have a router or managed switch, that works in a different subnet than the connected devices.
On one hand you want to work with the connected devices, on the other hand you want to configure the switch without changing the IP address of the network adapter every minute.

Example 2:
You build up a project that has UDP communication and for testing you want to use a UDP send and receive application. In this situation both applications want to use the same ports on the network. So only one application will work as expected, the other one will faill communicating over UDP. Here it helps assigning individual IP addresses to the applications. But therefore you will need multiple IP addresses in the same subnet.

Preferences:
You will need administrative rights on the machine to modify the settings.
You cannot use DHCP with this adapter and need to specify static IP addresses. Ensure that this is possible in the network.

How to:
  1. Open the Windows settings with  <Windows> I . If necessary, go back to the main page.
  2. Now select "Network & Internet"

  3. Now select "Change adapter options"

  4. Select the adapter, you want to configer by a double click:

  5. A Status Dialog opens, where you select "Properties". You either need Admin rights or an additional account with admin rights to proceed.
  6. Now the properties dialog opens where you select "Internet protocol Version 4 (TCP/IP)" and select the "Properties" button.
In the screenshots below there is the German version of the dialogs:
  7. Now if not already set, choose to use a manually entered IP address (1).
And enter the address (2) and subnet mask (3).
If you want to work with SYMPHOLIGHT we recommend the subnet mask 255.255.255.0

    (4) Now press "Advanced..." in order to add additional IP addresses.
  8. In the following dialog press

    (1) "Add..." to add IP addresses
    (2)   select an element and press "Modify..." to change the selected element or
    (3) select an element and press "Delete" for deleting it.
    (4) Press "OK" when done. The dialog will close.
  9. Repeat closing the other dialogs.
  10. Depending on the application you might need to restart the application that the software gets notice.
Now we reached the end of the tutorial.
